How to become a patient

The Massachusetts State Medical Marijuana Program has approved the use of cannabis for patients with the following severe, debilitating or life-threatening conditions:

  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV or AIDs
  • Hepatitis C
  • ALS
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • MS
  • Anxiety
  • Other debilitating conditions as determined by a qualifying patient’s healthcare provider

5 Steps to Obtain your Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Card

Step 1: Contact Your Healthcare Provider

Ask if your practitioner is registered with the Department of Public Health to issue a certification. Schedule a consultation to learn if cannabis can help.

Step 2: Obtain Your Patient Certification

After determining whether cannabis is appropriate for your condition, your practitioner will issue a patient certification that includes a PIN.

Step 3: Register to Obtain Your Card

Register on the Massachusetts Virtual Gateway, then use the PIN from your practitioner to create your account in the MMJ Online system. Your Medical Marijuana card will arrive in the mail in a few days.

Step 4: Designate Up to 2 Caregivers

Patients can designate up to two caregivers who can pick up their medication from the dispensary. Caregivers need to go through the registration process and will receive an identification card.

Step 5: Visit a Dispensary

Bring your MMJ card and a state-issued ID to Mayflower or the dispensary of your choice. Or sign up with Mayflower online.
