The Massachusetts State Medical Marijuana Program has approved the use of cannabis for patients with severe, debilitating or life-threatening conditions.
Physicians and certified nurse practitioners who want to include cannabis as part of their patient treatment options must complete an approved education course and register with the state.
Additionally, the state requires a “bona fide healthcare provider-patient relationship” in which the healthcare provider has conducted a clinical visit, completed and documented a full assessment of the patient’s medical history and current medical condition, has explained the potential risks and benefits of the marijuana use, and has a role in the patient’s ongoing care and treatment.
